  • Proposal Writing: Making a Real Connection

Connecting with the client is one piece of the proposal writing puzzle. Proposal Writing: Making a Real Connection Freelancers are amazing at what they do. Business development, though? That’s a different skill set.   There’s a lot of discussion on social media about how to write an effective proposal—especially on Upwork. This is the first blog in a four part series to help you write proposals that resonate with clients and land more work: Connection Statement Your Services Your Impact Closing and Call to Action (CTA)   This blog on the  Connection Statement .   Proposals Require Strategy—and a Spark   Proposing on Upwork involves strategy, tactics, and, truthfully, a little bit of luck.  This post leans into the  tactical  side—specifically, how to make a quick and meaningful connection with a client you know almost nothing about.   What Is a Connection Statement? It’s the line in your proposal that makes a client say: “They hear me and understand what I need.”   Connection statements reflect the emotional tone, goals, or frustrations in the client’s job post without  simply mirroring it back. You’re not just regurgitating the words they used; you’re tuning in to what they care about and showing them you get it.   Why This Matters (Even More Than You Think) I took inspiration for this blog from the process authors use to write query letters. When authors query literary agents, they have just 300–350 words to convince someone to keep reading. One of the top complaints from agents? Very few people  make a connection . Queries often feel cold, generic, or transactional.   It’s a little easier in the query world: agents have bios, social media, interviews—context clues to help you tailor your message. On Upwork, though, you’re flying almost blind. All you have is the job description.   Here’s how to connect when that’s all you’ve got:   Step 1: Read the Job Description Thoroughly It’s tempting to skim and rush. You may think you already know what the client wants. But slow down. Read the job description carefully. You’re looking for  clues —not just about the work, but about the person behind it.   Step 2: Assess the Tone Ask yourself: Is this person frustrated? Excited? Are they overwhelmed, decisive, hesitant? Do they drop hints about what’s driving this project? Let’s look at two examples pulled directly from Upwork.   Example 1: Executive Assistant Job Post "We are seeking a proactive Executive Assistant to support our operations by managing communications and providing organizational assistance. The ideal candidate will excel in multitasking and possess strong communication skills. Responsibilities include handling additional postings, coordinating schedules, and assisting with various management tasks. If you are highly organized and have a knack for effective communication, we would love to hear from you!” What does this client value? Efficiency Organization Communication What’s the tone? Direct, crisp, efficient—but also warm. That final line ("we would love to hear from you!") includes an exclamation mark, which adds a friendly, upbeat vibe.   Example 2: Shopify Web Designer Job Post “We are seeking a Shopify expert to design and launch an online store for [Company]. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in Shopify development and a knack for creating visually appealing, user-friendly e-commerce sites. Responsibilities include setting up the store, customizing templates, integrating payment gateways, and optimizing for SEO and performance. If you have a proven track record of successful Shopify projects and can deliver a high-quality store efficiently, we want to hear from you!” What does this client value? Experience Technical skill Results What’s the tone? Professional, knowledgeable, clear—and again, warm. The last line opens the door with a friendly invitation.   Step 3: Look at the Client Reviews If the client has worked with freelancers before, check their reviews. How do they speak about past collaborations? That can give you even more insight into their personality, preferences, and values.   In the Shopify example, this client consistently leaves thoughtful, encouraging feedback reinforcing key skills. That tells you they likely appreciate strong communication and mutual respect.   Step 4: Craft Your Connection Statement Your connection statement should be 1–2 sentences max. The structure is simple: Acknowledge their situation → Pivot to what you offer. Examples: “You’re ready to level up—and you need someone who can keep pace and bring clarity. That’s where I come in.” “You have a lot on your plate. I specialize in jumping in with minimal ramp-up and creating calm.” Based on the samples above: Admin Role: “It sounds like you manage a busy office where organization is critical. I thrive in fast-paced environments.” Web Designer: “Congratulations on deciding to launch your store! That’s a big step. As a Shopify expert, I’ve helped clients launch clean, high-converting sites efficiently.”   You’re not trying to become the client’s best friend. You’re demonstrating that you  hear them —and you’re already tuned into their priorities.   Bottom Line A strong connection statement is one of the simplest ways to differentiate your proposal. It shows empathy, insight, and professionalism in just a few words. And that can be the difference between getting ignored and getting hired.   Want to Learn More? ✨ Ready to see real examples in action? • Journey to Rallem

Author Maria Levato continues the story that began in the Island of Run e with the second installment titled Journey to Rallem . Book Description After losing her loved ones in a war she fought for the greater good, Josie, a priestess, finds that time only serves to deepen her pain. When she hears about a way to exploit her connection to the Spirit Realm to bring them back, she gathers her friends and sets out across an unmapped continent to find it. Jameson, one of those traveling with her, is a half-angel with an inferiority complex. He's had feelings for her for quite some time, but has never spoken up about it. He'll do anything to see her happy again, even if it means bringing them back and watching over her as she loves them. As they travel, they come into contact with Rath, a deranged priest from Josie's line. Rath exploits Josie's vulnerability to breathe life back into a war he fought long ago against Jameson's ancestor, Rettferd. This further complicates their mission. The grief and stress drive Josie to turn to Jameson to ease her mind. Book Review This fantasy novel takes a creative approach to exploring grief, grudges, and both the awesome and terrible power of love. Josie is a priestess who lost both her lovers and is on a quest to revive their souls. Along the way, she releases a demon which triggers a war among humans, demons, and angels. The second half of the book moved more quickly than the first. The ending sets up the next book in the series. The Journey to Rallem deftly explores themes of leadership, alliances, and generational differences in a well-built out fantasy world. Favorite Quote: Is he asking a question or are his thoughts just leaking from his mouth because they overflow from his mind? - Josie Thank you to Maria for providing an eARC. 3.0/5.0 Stars Grief | Romantasy | Polyamory | Steamy | Journey

  • What to Do with a Negative Book Review

Not everyone is going to love your work, and that’s okay. Congratulations! You are published! If you’re an author who has shared your work with the public, you know there will be good reviews and there will be less than good reviews. Some may even be bad. No matter how many glowing, five star, happy emoji, full of love and adoration reviews you get, those few negative ones will worm their way into your psyche, take up residence, and hang around like a houseguest who has overstayed their welcome. We’re human, so we fixate on the negative. It’s a psychological phenomenon called “ negativity bias .” We tend to see the negative and feel its effects more acutely than we feel the happiness of positivity. So what do we do about this? Most advice centers on two key themes: let it go and don’t respond. Both are good advice, but when you’re staring at a bad review and your keyboard is right there and your id is saying “tell that illiterate fool they have no idea what they’re talking about” it’s tough to just let it go. Here’s the advice that helped me and that I’ve turned to time and again. First, there are high highs and low lows in the world of literature. You write something fantastic, get a good review, have your work acknowledged, accepted, maybe even rewarded. All of those are highs. The lows could be writer’s block, financial worries, a bad review, or a rejection letter (or five or ten of them). A wise woman once told me that our role isn’t to ride the  highs and lows. It’s to remain steady as the highs and lows rise and fall around us. That was good advice. I used to work as global business consultant and those highs were just as spectacular as the lows. For the sake of my physical and mental health, I learned to acknowledge the highs while I remained rooted in my everyday life. I was grateful for the lessons learned from the lows and focused on moving forward with wisdom and grace. That sounds lovely, doesn't it? I tried really hard to do that consistently, but there were some days the lows flattened me and the highs pulled me too far from my path. We’re human. The keys are to acknowledge what’’s going on and course correct. I believe resilience is a critical life skill. Second, objections mean someone is seriously considering your work. I learned this one when I was a sales manager for a national furniture retailer. When someone pushed back on price, the delivery timeline, or if they really needed that second end table, it meant that the customer was picturing the furniture in their home. An objection is a buying signal. The same holds for pushback on your manuscript. Someone really considered it. They read it, thought about it, and they thought about it enough to right a review. You reached them. They may have a strong opionion about your work, but they read it and heard you. This leads to the third bit of advice: feedback says more about the giver than the receiver. Some days I hang on to this one like a lifeline. Our feedback is shaped by the lens through which we view the world. I work with a best selling author whose latest books have many positive reviews. Shortly after publication, someone left a negative review. The hero in this story starts out weak. He’s a little annoying, frankly, but that’s the point. The book blurb even uses the words “weak to strong.” The character turns it around to become a hero in the story because his journey to find inner strength is the point of the book. The reviewer explained that this wasn’t a journey they wanted to be on, they couldn’t get past the early chapters, and stopped reading. Fair enough. This says more about the reviewer than the book, though. The reviewer may have had a vision for how a hero would be defined in this genre. Maybe they’re going through a tough time and they aren’t interested in reading about a fictional character in a fantasy world who also has to struggle. Maybe it hits too close to an experience the reviewer had. Whatever it is, it says more about the reviewer than the book. There are people who will be trolls or leave truly awful reviews for the sake of being mean. What could possibly be going on in their life they would slam an author? Just shake your head, feel sympathy for them, and move on. If someone is harassing or threatening, then report those reviews to the platform. In all instances, do not engage. The internet is forever, even if you delete something, a digital copy remains somewhere. Just read the review and move to the next one. I also encourage my authors to keep a brag file. Copy the reviews that were positive or that really meant something to you. Sometimes a reviewer shares a heartfelt message or explains a personal connection to the work. Put those in a single document. When you need a boost, read them. It’s not just about the praise, it’s about the lives your story touched. Try to remember, feedback is simply information. You can choose to assess it, then use or disregard the information as you see fit. It takes courage to write your book and to make it available to the public. Authors put a little bit of themselves into everything they create. You’re intentionally opening yourself up to people’s praise and negativity. That’s tremendously brave. I’m proud of you, and the world is a better place because of your courage.

  • Book Review: The Business Trip

Jessie Garcia's debut novel is filled with exciting twists that led me to finish The Business Trip in less than 24 hours. Book Description Stephanie and Jasmine have nothing and everything in common. The two women don’t know each other but are on the same plane. Stephanie is on a business trip and Jasmine is fleeing an abusive relationship. After a few days, they text their friends the same exact messages about the same man—the messages becoming stranger and more erratic. And then the two women vanish. The texts go silent, the red flags go up, and the panic sets in. When Stephanie and Jasmine are each declared missing and in danger, it begs the questions: Who is Trent McCarthy? What did he do to these women— or what did they do to him? Twist upon twist, layer upon layer, where nothing is as it seems, The Business Trip takes you on a descent into the depths of a mastermind manipulator. But who is playing who? Book Review Stephanie is headed to a convention for her job and Jasmine is feeling an abusive relationship. What happens after their fateful meeting is told through multiple points of view that are easy to follow and add depth to this thriller. The range of personalities articulate themes of audacity, jealousy, longing, dissatisfaction, and hope. I listened to the multicast audiobook which featured an all star cast: Andrew Eiden, Dylan Fitzpatrick, Fred Berman, Gail Shalan, Hilary Huber, Jennifer Pickers, John Pirhalla, Kimberly M. Wetherell, Kirby Heyborne, and Tim Campbell. Foreshadowing tempered some of the twists but added a healthy dose of anticipation. The narration made the detail-heavy sections interesting and entertaining. Given the detailed explanation of events and the modern day setting, there are two moments that felt glossed over for the sake of the story. First, someone paying cash for a flight and/or buying a one-way ticket on the day of travel would be subject to extra security screening, but the character appeared to move through the airport with ease. Second, a character very clearly states intentions to protect themself, but it's missed by another character. After being so attuned and perceptive---and making changes on the fly in reaction to other people's behaviors---missing this comment felt out of character. The Business Trip is quite the ride. It's gritty and diaboloical. It'll grab you from the start and not let go until the final stunning twist. Thank you to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for a preview audiobook. 4.0./5.0 Stars

  • #1 Best Seller!

The Legend of Kazro is a best seller! One of my client’s books is #1 on the Best Seller list in the Other RPG category! The Legend of Kazro by D. R. R. Hatch is a LitRPG or Literature Role Playing Game book. You can read it for the fun romp through a fantasy world, but it is so much more than that. A cast of 3-dimensional, complex characters navigate quests, address past traumas, and form friendships as they unite in their efforts to stop the Mad King from unleashing an evil force. The world building is fantastic and the writing is even better. The Legend of Kazro is first in a new series. It will pull you in from the start and is unputdownable until the very last page. Be aware of trigger warnings for domestic abuse, bullying, physical assault, and gore. Please join me in congratulating D. R. R. Hatch on this amazing accomplishment. Dakota, I’m so proud of you and Kazro! Book Description Kazro never asked for the quest. • 2024 Favorite Reads

My Favorite Reads of 2024 I’m a voracious reader and just like my taste in music, my book choices are eclectic. I’m also a Type A. I love organizing and planning. I maintain a reading spreadsheet to capture the books I read or listened to, how I procured it, how much it cost, my thoughts on the books, and so on. It’s just for me and reading it is a nice walk down memory lane. My favorite books from 2024 weren’t necessarily published in 2024, it’s just when I read them. They span genres: short stories, literary fiction, and thrillers. Take a look at the list and then share your favorite reads of 2024. How We Named the Stars Andrés N. Ordorica Tin House Books Published January 30, 2024 This book takes the top spot. With lyrical prose, Andrés N. Ordorica tells a beautiful LGBTQ+ coming of age story in his debut novel. You know what happens, there are no surprises, and yet I sobbed as I finished this book. This novel is about love, loss, and standing upon the shoulders of those who came before us. It’s not just my favorite for 2024, it is one of my top five of all time. Schizotopia Andy Siege UpLit Press Published April 2, 2024 Schizotopia is one of the most creative books I’ve ever read. I had to suspend everything I know about reading and writing to just be present with the story, which chronicles the lived experience of schizophrenia. Touching, darkly funny, and inspired. I have a personal connection to this book as well. It inspired me to launch Robyn Edits. The Women Kristin Hannah St. Martin’s Press Published February 6, 2024 So much has been written about this book so I won’t revisit it here. I checked this book out of the library and had a multi-week wait for it. As beautiful and rich as the story is, what stuck with me was Ms. Hannah’s message that she’d been thinking about this book for a long time, but she wasn’t ready to write it until now. She wanted to honor this story and the people who inspired it. This book is a compelling tribute to women, both military and civilian. James Percival Everett Doubleday Published March 19, 2024 There’s not much more to say about this exciting, touching, and sometimes funny tale of Huckleberry Finn told from Jim’s perspective. It is an instant American classic. I hope it becomes required reading alongside Mark Twain’s version, because it is a literary masterpiece. Kill for Me, Kill for You Steve Cavanagh Atria Books Published March 19, 2024 This book made the list because it takes a lot to surprise me in a thriller and I was shocked not once, but twice. I audibly gasped as I read this book. A lot of book descriptions say the tension lasts until the last page, but fail to deliver. Kill for Me, Kill for You DELIVERS. I was hooked from page one to the devious, delicious, suspenseful, twisty end. Life or Death Michael Robotham Mulholland Books Published March 10, 2015 An inmate, Audie, is serving a 10-year sentence. The day before he is scheduled to be released, he escapes. Told in both the present and the past, this riveting story champions the underdog’s journey to triumph over corruption. The New Year’s Eve Party: A Holiday Thriller Short Story Daniel Hurst Self-Published Published December 26, 2022 A night of NYE revelry leads to sharing resolutions with strangers. This quick 90-minute suspenseful read does just enough to make you question if you’ll ever share your resolutions again. Ushers: A Short Story Joe Hill Amazon Original Stories November 1, 2024 This is a supernatural horror short story that explores fate. It is chilling and emotional and worth every second of reading time. Two federal agents interview Martin, a young man who has survived two disasters. They want to know why he is still alive. This imaginative story currently ranks #1 in 45-Minute Literature & Fiction Short Reads, Kindle Singles: Mystery, Thriller & Suspense, and 45-Minute Science Fiction & Fantasy Short Reads. Conclave Robert Harris Vintage Published November 22, 2016 I had to read this book since I wanted to see the movie. Turns out I read it, listened to the audiobook, and saw the movie. The book is equally suspenseful and emotional. There are touching, gripping, and funny scenes throughout. The movie’s cinematography is spectacular. The twist at the end, while foreshadowed, is still a shocker. The Cage Bonnie Kistler Harper Published February 15, 2022 Two women get into an elevator and only one comes out alive. Many reviewers say the protagonist, Shay, is unlikeable. She's cunning, conniving, and, I agree, not entirely likable. The pace isn’t consistent either, which leads to some slow parts. This book made my list because I’m struck by Shay’s ethical lines. She’ll lie in some areas, but not others. The story also calls into question how Shay’s behavior would be perceived if she were a man instead of a woman. Would a man get a way with her manipulation and lies? It’s a thought provoking read. • Don’t Go Viral for a Gaffe

You know that moment when you send an email and your stomach clenches? You wonder if you spelled the recipient's name correctly or remebered to attach the attachment. We've all felt it, right? Now imagine that email was going to be seen around the world. You'd get someone to proofread it, right? Right? Go viral for the right reasons. Make sure your audience focuses on your message, not on errors. As the world said goodbye to 2024, we also received the news that it was time to say goodbye to President Carter. Jimmy Carter was a peanut farmer who served our country in the military and then held the highest office in the land. He is most well-known for his work as a humanitarian, a lifelong volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, and for his devotion to his beloved wife, Rosalynn Carter. Unfortunately, when a state government official extended sympathies to the family, they made a serious error. In a press release, the official extended condolences to Rosalynn Carter, who predeceased her husband by more than a year. The gaffe was picked up by politicians, the press, and social media. People blamed AI, questioned who wrote the press release, took potshots at the official The mistake became its own story and detracted from the well-intended statement of sympathy. Politicians typically don’t have proofreaders on their staff. It’s up to communications teams to proofread the work. This is such a stunning error, that I find it difficult to pin it on a single person. Instead, I think there was process breakdown. The late-president passed away on December 29, the weekend between Christmas and New Year’s Day. I suspect a lot of people were on vacation when the news broke. All of us have been there. We’re rushing to get something out the door, think we have it, but we don’t. Fortunately, most of us don’t become memes or have our mistakes broadcast around the world. ❌ Don’t create an ancillary story ❌ Don’t let mistakes overshadow the main point ✅ Proofread #proofreading #editing #proofreader #businessediting  #copyediting #proofread #translation #proofreadingservice #translate #english #writingcommunity #writing #translator #translationagency

  • Crafting Compelling Writing Objectives for Impactful Proposals

Crafting compelling writing objectives for impactful proposals is essential for success in various fields, ranging from academics to business. When creating proposals, whether it be for a grant, a project, or a business venture, having clear and effective writing objectives is key to capturing the attention of your audience and conveying your message persuasively. Writing objectives serve as a roadmap for your proposal, outlining what you aim to achieve and how you plan on getting there. By crafting well-defined writing objectives, you not only provide direction for yourself as the writer but also ensure that your audience understands the purpose and value of your proposal. To craft compelling writing objectives, consider the following tips: Be specific: Clearly define what you aim to accomplish with your proposal. Avoid vague or ambiguous language and instead focus on precise and measurable objectives. For example, instead of stating "improve community engagement," you could specify "increase volunteer participation by 20% within six months." Be realistic: Set achievable goals that are within reach given the resources and constraints of your project. Setting unrealistic objectives can undermine the credibility of your proposal and lead to disappointment if not met. Be relevant: Ensure that your writing objectives align with the overall goals of your proposal. Each objective should contribute to the overarching purpose of your project and directly support its success. Be time-bound: Establish a timeline for achieving your objectives to provide a sense of urgency and accountability. Setting deadlines can help you stay on track and demonstrate your commitment to your proposal. Be impactful: Consider the potential outcomes of your writing objectives and aim to create a meaningful impact with your proposal. Highlight the benefits and value of achieving your objectives to persuade your audience of the importance of your project. By following these tips and crafting compelling writing objectives, you can create impactful proposals that resonate with your audience and drive the success of your projects. Remember to review and revise your objectives regularly to ensure they remain relevant and aligned with the goals of your proposal. In conclusion, writing objectives play a crucial role in the success of any proposal. By setting clear, specific, and impactful objectives, you can effectively convey your message, capture the attention of your audience, and ultimately achieve your desired outcomes. Mastering the art of crafting writing objectives is a valuable skill that can elevate your proposals and make them stand out in a competitive landscape.

  • Polishing Your Writing: Common Punctuation Mistakes to Avoid

Punctuation is a crucial aspect of writing that can greatly impact the clarity and effectiveness of your message. As a writer, mastering the rules of punctuation can help you convey your thoughts accurately and engage your audience effectively. In this blog post, we will discuss some common punctuation mistakes to avoid, helping you polish your writing for a more professional and impactful result. Commas are a common source of confusion for many writers. One common mistake is using a comma to splice two independent clauses together. For example, "The team won the game, they celebrated all night." To correct this error, you can either use a semicolon to separate the clauses or use a conjunction after the comma, such as: "The team won the game, and they celebrated all night." Another common punctuation mistake is the misuse of apostrophes. Apostrophes are used to indicate possession or to show that letters have been omitted in a contraction. For example, "The company's success is impressive" shows possession, while "It's a beautiful day" is a contraction of "it is." Misusing apostrophes can lead to confusion and detract from the professionalism of your writing. Quotation marks are another area where writers often make mistakes. It's essential to use quotation marks to indicate direct speech or to enclose titles of short works, such as articles or poems. One common error is placing punctuation outside of the quotation marks, which is incorrect in American English. For example, "The report is due tomorrow", is an incorrect placement of punctuation. The correct placement would be: "The report is due tomorrow." Lastly, knowing when to use a colon or a semicolon can also elevate the quality of your writing. A colon is used to introduce a list or an explanation, while a semicolon is used to connect two closely related independent clauses. Understanding the distinction between the two can help you structure your writing more effectively and enhance its readability. In conclusion, polishing your writing by avoiding common punctuation mistakes is essential for creating clear, professional, and engaging content. By mastering the rules of punctuation, you can improve the overall quality of your writing and effectively communicate your message to your audience. Stay tuned for more tips and quizzes to help you enhance your writing skills.
